OUR EXPERIENCE
Our experience with creating and finishing this project has been an exhilarating one full of growth. From the beginning when we were assigned our topic, we were unsure of what exactly we were going to do the audio and news packages, info graphic, photo-essay, and the “how to” package on. Then the ideas began unraveling. With Donald Trump becoming the president elect for the 2016 election, lack of diversity becoming more and more evident, and blatant acts of violence happening on campus, it was time for a change—and black students began making this change happen. Our team brainstormed when and where we can capture footage of these things happening. Some went on the quad to film the how-to piece, some went to open forums to capture natural sound and interviews from the students who created the event, and others simply researched to make our project as credible and informative as possible.
During the process of completion, there was a lot of stress, but now that it is over, it is safe to say that we all have grown and we’ve learned a lot. Dr. Collins has put so much faith in us that we can do it, and has also sent us out with the appropriate tools of knowledge to make our project as professional as possible. Trying to get footage had to have been the most challenging because every case was situational. One day there may be a protest while each of us was in class, the next couple of days there may be a protest late at night that many people have not shown up to. It was challenging, but as true journalists we were up for the challenge! Furthermore, beginning the class with little to no knowledge of the equipment to throughout during the project, we were able to use equipment with an expertise. We knew to get head room during interviews, we knew to get in quiet spaces to get sound on tape, and we knew to not have any shaky or unstable shots (Dr. Collins hates that). This project allowed us to take all that we learned and put it into one big assignment. In addition to the professional aspect of the assignment, we each all got to know each other better. We were able to learn each other’s strengths and weaknesses, personalities and how each acts under pressure. As Dr. Collins stated, we have to learn to work in groups because in the newsroom, one never does anything alone. Those words stuck with us, as we all aspire to be in the media industry one way or another; we had to learn to work with each other in order to get our assignment done—the best way it can be. We are forever thankful for this experience in JOUR215-Multimedia.
Thank You Dr. Collins!
